The Yogurt Diaries, #10

First yogurt of the day is Axelrod Fat Free Vanilla. This was $.89 regular price in the regular grocery store.

Axelrod Fat Free Vanilla

It’s fat free, so no fat, but it has 12 grams of sugar, so it weighs in at about the same as some of the smaller dairies’ sugar content. When I opened it, a lot of the yogurt was stuck to the top foil, and it looked creamy.

Well. Then I tasted it. And this was possibly the sweetest of all the yogurts I’ve tasted so far– wholly unappetizingly sweet. It tasted a bit like eating artificially-flavored cake frosting out of the container. So I checked the ingredients and saw this is sweetened with fructose instead of sugar or corn syrup…

…and then I kept reading and saw that it was ALSO sweetened with aspartame.

This really pisses me off. Not only that you would make something that has BOTH naturally-occurring sugars and aspartame in it (why?!) but also that you wouldn’t advertise that on the front of the container Err, actually, it does say it on the front of the container, in tiny letters, over to one side. I don’t eat things with aspartame in it, so Axelrod is getting a great big NO from me and I’m not finishing the container. Seriously, if you need sugar free food, I can’t even recommend it since it HAS sugar in it, too!

So I am eating another. This one is Cascade Fresh Fat Free Yogurt, and I am happy to say we are back to yogurts without super long ingredient lists. It was $.65 on sale, the cheapest yogurt I have tried so far, and $.89 regular price.

This is sweetened with fruit juice concentrate and has 12 grams of sugar and 110 calories, which is the lowest caloric count I’ve gotten on one of these babies.

Opening it, there is nothing on the top foil, and very little water in the cup. It is smoother than the flan-type yogurts but not really puddingy: it sort of has the consistency of thick sour cream.

Disclosure: I was expecting to give this a negative review because I have had some other Cascade flavors and did not like them, but the vanilla is excellent. It is creamy without being too thick and heavy, and sour, but only a little, so it tastes the way yogurt ought to. It is also mercifully less sweet than the other yogurts I’ve tried. There is not much vanilla to it, but it tastes a little sweet and a lot like milk, so it mostly just tastes like good dairy.

So far, I would rank this up there with the True Yogurt as one of the best I’ve tried, and at the cheapest price point so far, I think Cascade gets a gold star from me! I will give some of their other flavors another chance! Cascade Fresh’s website is here.

Yay! Cascade Fresh is the yogurt I eat other than Greek yogurt. The lemon one tastes like lemon meringue pie.

I am going to be so sad when you run out of yogurts to review.

I am, too, but people are giving me more and more recommendations! I will have to think of something else to review when I'm done with yogurts, but it has to be something that won't make me into the world's fattest lady if I eat it every day.

Thank you!

Oooh, sounds good.

I don't know if it's been discussed already, but what are your thoughts on fruit on the bottom? A lot of people don't like it.

I haven't done any fruit on the bottoms. Should I do, say, strawberry yogurt when I finish the plain flavors?

I know people who like it and won't eat any other kind, but I also know people who hate it. I personally could give a damn how the fruit is in the yogurt, as long as it is yummy.

Tillamook! Tillamook!

People keep saying Tillamook, but I don't think we have Tillamook here. We have their cheese, but I've never seen the yogurt. I will keep an eye out for it, though.

A note about fat free ypghurts!

In the business when I was in it, there were two thoughts about fat free food in general:

1: They were aimed towards the health conscious. These were generally not very sweet, rather sour, and with little flavor. Over here I think the health conscious people are suspicious of anything that tastes good... So in general they were not sweetened at all either.

2: They were aimed towards the dieters. These were aimed towards the people that wanted to eat healthy, but had no clue and were generally sugar addicts. Thus they REALLY advertised the fat free bit, but were sweet as all hell. It looks like the Axelrod one might be of that type... They have also done the trick that in sweden is called 'utan vanligt socker' which is basically if they use fructose or aspartames instead of regular sugar they can advertise that they don't have any regular sugar in it. Of course to use both fructose and aspartame in it is overkill in my book since both of them gives a more intensely sweet flavor than sugar. But I guess it is aimed at the people that would rather have a pack of vanilla pudding instead, and then it actually is healthier so...

Well, it depends on your definition of "healthy" since I'm of the opinion that nothing that has aspartame is healthier than something with all-natural ingredients, even if the thing with the natural ingredients is full of natural fats and natural sugars.

That is pretty much true here, too-- a lot of fat-free things are either flavorless or kind of disgustingly sweet. A year or two ago I tasted some low calorie yogurts that pretty much tasted like kitty litter with sugar in it. It was vile.

I love you.

I do not even eat yoghurt! This is really entertaining, though. It fills the same niche in my curious brain as, like, What Not To Wear or Trading Spaces. But it rots my brain far, far less.

I am so happy! Is there a food you do like that I can test sometime?

Well, I just had an elaborate dream about gummy candies...

I also really enjoy soda, and am always on the lookout for new exciting sodas. Other than that, though, I eat almost no pre-packaged foods. If I think of something, I will suggest it! :)

I don't drink soda! Sorry!

I also want to make sure if I do this it is with food that is healthy enough that it is good for me to eat it every day. So candy and other junk food is out.
