The Ice Cream Diaries, #2
Sep. 11th, 2009 11:31 pmTofutti is the grandaddy of non-dairy ice cream. I remember back when I was a kid and my mom was big into health foods, we used to get tofutti a lot. So it’s been around since before real vegan products were readily available. I think it cost about $3.50 a pint.

Tofutti Vanilla
I couldn’t get Tofutti in mint, so I got it in vanilla.
A half-cup serving has 210 calories and 117 from fat. It has 16 grams of sugar and is mainly made of soy. It does, however, have both corn syrup and corn oil in it.

Tofutti Vanilla Opened
I noticed on opening that it has a smell reminiscent of canned vanilla frosting– very sweet and a bit chemical-y. The flavor is very strong and doesn’t really taste as much like soy as I remember it tasting when I was a kid. It actually tastes sort of maple-y to me, which is weird, because I just went and looked at the label, and guess what isn’t in it? If you guessed maple syrup, you would be right.
It had an odd, light and fluffy texture, sort of like cool whip that has been frozen. And it doesn’t taste nearly as much like soy as most soy-based products.
I found it pleasant but not amazing. I would totally eat this if someone offered it to me, but I don’t think it would be my first choice to buy for myself.
I am also trying a coconut ice cream! It is called Luna & Larry’s Coconut Bliss. The flavor is mint galactica. One 1/2 cup serving has 206 calories and 129 calories from fat. There are 13 grams of sugar.

Coconut Bliss Mint Galactica
I am excited for this because I had a coconut ice cream with my parents a few weeks ago and I thought it was an excellent alternative to a dairy ice cream. There is no corn syrup in this ice cream, and there is organic chocolate with no dairy in it (it lists out the ingredients).
It actually says to remove from the freezer 5-10 minutes before eating. So now I guess I have to wait!

Coconut Bliss Mint Galactica
Okay, this seriously smells amazing. The mint is strong and minty, like when you chop mint in your kitchen, and it is white with tiny flecks of chocolate all over it. Like a galaxy! Like its name!
It is creamy and has a very strong flavor– strong mint, almost like a liqueur. I don’t really taste the coconut strongly, and the tiny flecks of chocolate melt in your mouth very quickly and they are very dark– no surprise, because there’s no milk in it!
This stuff is absolutely delicious. It’s a little pricey, over $5 a pint. But you know, if you don’t eat ice cream often, this stuff is decadent and delicious and I completely recommend it.
