I haven't been writing posts so much

Because I've been writing on my book! I'm very close to 25K, but I had to rewrite an entire scene to fix it; it didn't work the first time. Or, well, it worked exactly as I wanted it, but I realized it was implausible given modern protocol. And I always am just like, ehh, how many people are really going to care, but I angst more over how implausible the ordinary stuff in my stories is than the extraordinary stuff.

I also took a break tonight to go to some Comic-Con related events and just generally chill along with dianamcqueen. We drew pictures together! arielchan, we went to a bar called Side Bar, and it made me think of you.

I was wondering, do any of the people on my friendslist have a habit of buying clothing or shoes that you are not brave enough to wear? I have a tendency to buy things that are very beautiful and well-made and fashion forward because they are exciting in the store, but then I get them home and I just can't bring myself to wear them in public. I have a lot of shoes like this, beautiful shoes that I feel like I need an excuse to wear.

Tomorrow I get to spend the afternoon at Comic-Con! And I will probably go for a bit this weekend, but it's not nearly as stressful as last year. Is anyone else here going to be there? Let me know!

Oh, that is me with skirts. I go through periods where I want to feel girly so I set on a quest to find skirts. And when I finally find something that looks nice, I can't help buying it. And then it hangs in my closet forever. There's always an excuse not to wear it. I think I've given away at least 3 jeans skirts. Currently I have a nice knee-length white & blue skirt from Benetton and a nice long beach-y skirt in my closet. I think I wore the latter one once.

The nice thing is that my current job means I get to wear a lot more fashionable clothes than I ever used to-- I'm in the Hearst building; there are fashion magazines, and I'm expected to wear business casual, whatever that means. So I have been taking advantage of the fact that I can finally wear a lot of the outfits I have owned for a really long time. But I still have a lot of heely-shoes and a couple dresses and tops that I am just like... ...

I wholly encourage you to wear incredibly lovely shoes with straight-legged jeans and a plain t-shirt. If at any point you feel ridiculous, just sit down, hold your feet out in front of you, and admire them until you get a second wind.

Really, it's a liberating experience.

I would love to do that, but I can't wear jeans to work!

Part of the issue for me, especially with shoes, is that I always feel so awkward wearing heels, or I choose the shoes that will be more comfortable for walking ten blocks. I could bring them in a bag to work, but it always seems like an extra thing!

Oh yea, appropriate environment is helpful! For example, I could never make myself dress up* when I'm off to class, because in that environment I'm used to wearing very casual clothes (jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts).

*Term used loosely.

When I was in school, I was so much better at dressing up because I had a lot more time in the morning, and I didn't worry so much about appearance. I would wear really extravagant clothes to class-- ballgowns and stuff.

When I was in high school, I was sitting in class before class started one day, and a girl in the class said something about another girl and how she admired her for "not caring what she wears. She'll come in to school in sweats if she feels like it."

Or something. Obviously that's paraphrased.

The teacher, and I don't remember which teacher it was, but I have a guess, said, "She really doesn't care? She'll wear anything?"

And the girl said yes, because so-and-so didn't give a damn what people thought of her, and that was so brave.

And the teacher asked "Would she wear a ballgown?"

And the girl said "Ew, no, why?"

And the teacher said, "if she really didn't care what people thought, she would wear ballgowns."

So I started wearing ballgowns.

I always buy shoes that I could never walk in! If it were my duty to sit on a stool with my feet out all day so people could admire my lovely shoes, I would be just fine.
If you have a hidey hole in your office space, you could store a cute pair of heels or two, just in case you ever feel like cracking them out. I keep a pair of flats and a pair of heels at work, just in case I'm in desperate need of one or the other.

I do this with clothes too. Mostly things that are oddly cut, but somehow appealing to me. I have a skirt that I absolutely love, and it has a sloping hemline... I'm afraid it's too odd to wear out though. I don't like getting attention for what I'm wearing.

OMG, yes. I bought a bright green, beautifully cut coat this year, which I do wear (because it is my only coat) but I always feel SO self-conscious. I hope it is training me to care less about whether or not people are looking at me.

Wow! Maybe I will do that. Although the shoes I am more in trouble with this about are things like heeled leather boots with giant rosettes on them and a pair of tapestry-covered Victorian-style slip-ons with frou-frou on them.

I actually have no problem with people looking at me-- I wear a lot of ridiculous hand-made hats. It's more that there are certain things that I feel out-of-place wearing, like I am too ordinary/old/young/tall/short/boobified/fat/skinny to be allowed to wear them.

I love ridiculously ornate shoes. I've never learned how to wear them, either. LOL
Opaque tights and a plain skirt? In slushy streets, tapestry won't do well and boots aren't something you can just slip into at work.

I totally do the clothes/shoes thing, though I try really hard not to. I have a GORGEOUS pair of cork heels with awesome stitch work and gemstones on the heel, they look like earth mother goddess shoes and they actually look good on my feet. But I never wear heels, and when I wear these, I feel like I'm towering over everybody on the entire planet.

Oh, I totally do too. I have so many beautiful dresses and skirts that I haven't found the excuse to wear, but when I do I shy away. I also have a lot of kickass 4" heels that I don't really wear 'cause they kill my feet >.>

But what kind of shoes are they? In what ways are they fashion forward? If it's an issue of colour then you can always match it with accessories, but funky shapes are harder to find an excuse for (not that you need it, really! Your excuse should just be that "I bought them with my hard-earned money. So sod it." :D)

That is one of my problems. Colors I have an easy time with-- I wear TONS of crazy colors. It's more styles.

Hoy! I hear ya. (Really beautiful shoes by the way, I saw a few very similar pairs at the Bata Shoe Museum. When I visit NYC you're going to have to tell me where I can get these shoes from :D)

I'll use that particular pair as an example. I would either wear it with a pair of jeans (not for work, but at least for going out and such) and a blouse with (hint of) lace or frill, probably in light warm colour tones. I think the key would be to throw in both modern piece and an item from a similar fashion era so you keep the number of different elements to a minimum. Colour-wise, I would do either harmonic scale (even monochromatic?) or complementary, but I tend to be all match-y when it comes to colours. Actually, it could be fun as a semi-pirate ensemble too. In summer for example, you could roll up your jeans (or brown/black trousers) and wear it with a shoulder-bearing shirts (it would be fun if the sleeves had some volume) or something. So basically you can still wear it with modern interpretation of period items and place the accent on the shoes. And a really funky purse or something.
