Cocktail: Midnight Ride

On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-five;
Hardly a man is now alive
Who remembers that famous day and year.

I made a drink today to commemorate Paul Revere’s Ride. The base liquor is from Massachusetts, where the ride took place, and the other ingredients are from three of its bordering states– all places that fought in the American Revolution.

Ingredients for two cocktails
5 oz Greylock Gin (MA)
1/2 oz Eau de Vie de Pomme from Warwick Valley Distillery (NY) (It is acceptable to use Laird’s Applejack as an alternative as it comes from NJ)
1/2 oz homemade maple syrup (CT)
4 droppersful Urban Moonshine Citrus Bitters (VT)

Instructions
Chlll two martini glasses
Add ice to shaker
Add ingredients, swirl with wooden spoon, then shake
Pour & serve!

I also made a variant of this for my dad with 1 oz gin, 1/4 oz apple brandy, 1/2 oz maple syrup, and 1 dropper bitters on the rocks in a highball glass with soda to top it off.

Yay for Greylock. The mountain is visible from my window. And I've climbed it several times!

I'm flattered that VT is in there, but we were the 14th state. :D

It's a delicious-looking cocktail all the same!

Crap, whoops, really? History fail! Were you guys part of another colony originally? How did that happen?

[identity profile] yamiko.livejournal.com 2010-04-19 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
We were fought over by New York, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts before becoming our own country, and then finally joining the US.

Aha, okay, that makes sense! I was trying to figure out how a state that is bordered by three original states wasn't one. So I assume Vermonters fought in the Revolution? Because then it still works for the drink, I will just adjust my description!

Oh, yes! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Mountain_Boys

Yes! I have heard of them! Excellent! Thank you for the history lesson!

I fixed it! I figure since all three states border MA, that counts, too!

You should do this for all anniversaries of historic events.

[identity profile] zia-narratora.livejournal.com 2010-04-19 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Tell me when there are historic events that require cocktails and I will do my best.

LOL... that is awesome. Oooooh... can we create a challenge for you to create a drink based on a historic event? :-)

[identity profile] zia-narratora.livejournal.com 2010-04-19 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely, as long as I can do it with what's in my liquor cabinet. I can pick up new herbs, juices, or syrup flavorings, but I'm not going to run out and buy a liquor I don't have if it's not appropriate to use what's in my cabinet. I have a lot of gin, followed by bourbon and rum, and some tequila, but my mother and I don't drink vodka.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm... must ponder upcoming historical events then! :-)

I will do my best to accommodate!
