Today, I have two dairy ice creams. Ths first is Stonyfield Farm Organic ice cream. They didn’t have mint or vanilla, so I’ve got Creme Caramel.

Stonyfield Farm Creme Caramel

Stonyfield Farm Creme Caramel

If you remember from the yogurt reviews, I wasn’t crazy about the yogurt, but I still wanted to give their ice cream a try. It’s $3.99 a pint, which is pretty reasonable for a dairy ice cream. It has 260 calories per serving, 130 from fat, though, so it is a bit more calorie-heavy than most non-dairy ice creams. It also has a lot more sugar– 28 grams per serving. It’s sweetened with organic, naturally milled sugar.

It looks pretty nondescript on opening, and doesn’t smell like much. You can’t even really see the caramel.

But YUM! This ice cream is delicious. It tastes like it’s made with good, fresh milk, and although it’s a bit sweet, the texture is really creamy. It has a thick caramel swirl.

The only problem I have with this ice cream is that it melts very quickly– the same way homemade ice cream does, which is a plus, but I ate way more than I was intending to because I didn’t want to put melty ice cream in the freezer and have it re-freeze! But I would highly recommend this one!

My second ice cream is Green & Black vanilla. I can’t find the receipt for this one but I believe it cost a bit more than the Stonyfield, though. It’s another organic dairy ice cream.

Green & Black Vanilla

Green & Black Vanilla

It has significantly fewer calories per serving-190– and calories from fat– 100– than the Stonyfield. It also has less sugar– 17 grams per serving. The sugar is organic sugar and the ingredient list on this one is super short. The only things that are in here that you wouldn’t put into your homemade ice cream at home are guar gum and locust bean gum.

Green & Black Vanilla Opened

The inside of the container has a little star-shape on it, so the ice cream has a pretty indent when you open it. You can see the vanilla bean flecks all through this and the vanilla scent is really strong!

The ice cream is soft and has a really nice, smooth texture, but I think it’s a little too sweet and not heavy enough on the vanilla. It just doesn’t have a nice, solid flavor for eating alone. I think it would be really good with apple pie or something else that would mix with the flavor of it nicely, but on its own it just doesn’t have a lot of body, which it too bad because the texture is excellent.

Today, I am trying Purely Decadent Dairy Free ice cream. It’s made by Turtle Mountain, the same people as Soy Delicious, so I’m a little leery of how good it is going to be, but it seems to be a different product. And it comes in mint chocolate chip! It cost $3.99 at my health food store.

Purely Decadent Soy Mint Chip

Purely Decadent Soy Mint Chip

It’s another soy based ice cream, and it has 170 calories per serving, 60 from fat. It has 18 grams of sugar with cane juice, tapioce syrup, brown rice syrup, and there is bett sugar in the dairy-free chocolate. No corn products! Another thing I liked about this brand when I saw it in the store

It has a sweet smell and looks like it has a glutinous texture. I forgot to take a photo, so you’ll just have to take my word for it. The flavor of the ice cream is very sweet and minty, and a little syrupy– it has a sort of Junior Mint flavor to it, the same way that the Organic Rice Divine I tasted in the first one of these posts.

It has chocolate in a ribbon like Italian straciatella, not in hard chips, and it is really good. It’s dark, a little bitter, and melts very slowly in your mouth.

I think this is a much better product than the Soy Delicious ice cream, even if it is from the same company, and if you’re trying to choose between the two of them, definitely choose this one!

Purely Decadent also mades a coconut milk variation that has a much shorter ingredient list and that is sweetened with agave syrup and also comes in mint chocolate chip. It cost $4.49 for a pint.

Purely Decadent Coconut Mint Chip

Purely Decadent Coconut Mint Chip

It has the same number of calories– 170– per serving, but somewhat more fat– 80 calories from fat per serving. But it only has 13 grams of sugar, which is pretty low compared to most of the ice creams I’ve tried so far, so if you’re more concerned about sugar than fat, this might be a good choice.

Purely Decadent Coconut Mint Chip opened

Purely Decadent Coconut Mint Chip opened

Even just looking at this one in the container, it looks extremely white and creamy. It has a very, very mild scent. It has an interesting texture– a soft, fluffy, creamy texture– but not a heavy one– and you can taste the coconut in it very strongly– so it really tastes like coconut-mint-chip. The chocolate in it is similar to the chocolate in the soy version, but there doesn’t seem to be as much of it in this.

I thought this was pretty good, but I think I like the soy one better. Both of them are yummy, though!

If you think I am too stupid to tell the difference between a comment from someone in a marketing, PR, publicity, or other position and a genuine reader, I will spamblock your comment. I am totally happy to consider suggestions, but please don’t try to advertise your products or disparage other products or use a fake email address. If you would like to comment on my blog, please use a real email address and identify yourself as a representative of that product, and I will be happy to get back to you, and I will be pleased to review your product if it is available at my local grocery store. However, I will be less likely to show much goodwill toward you if you attempt any form of deception in my blog.

If you are a regular reader and are going WTF at that, yes, it’s happened twice now.

Today, I am doing my first dairy ice cream of this series. It’s Alden’s ice cream, a natural, organic ice cream from Oregon. It’s sweetened with cane juice and has no corn products in it. It cost around $5.50 for a quart and a half. And it comes in mint chip!

Alden's Ice Cream Mint Chip

Alden's Ice Cream Mint Chip

It is manufactured on machinery used for nuts in case that is important for any of you.

A 1/2 cup serving has 200 calories and 110 calories from fat–so less than Tofutti or the coconut ice cream, but more than either of the rice ice creams. It has 16 grams of sugar per serving

Alden's Mint Chip Opened

Alden's Mint Chip Opened

Opening it up, it is totally flecked all over with little teeny bits of chocolate. It doesn’t smell quite so strongly of mint as some of the non-dairy ice creams did.

It is very light and fluffy, soft, and easy to scoop It is a bit sweet, and not very strongly minty. The chocolate adds more to the texture than to the flavor, coming up in nice little melty bumps, but it’s not a really rich, strong chocolate taste.

This is a pretty good ice cream, but I don’t think there’s anything about it that really stands out to me. The flavors are all pleasant but not really strong, so while I don’t think this ice cream is going to offend anybody’s taste buds, it’s not going to make anyone say, “wow!” either.

The next ice cream is a soy ice cream: Soy Delicious non-dairy frozen dessert in vanilla– the grocery store had it in a ton of delicious-sounding flavors but none in mint.

Soy Delicious Vanilla

Soy Delicious Vanilla

This was sweetened with tapioca syrup and brown rice syrup, pineapple, apple, pear, and peach plus potato sugar! Wow. That is a lot of different interesting stuff. It has 110 calories per serving and only 15 calories from fat, which is the lowest so far. It’s also got the lowest sugar content– only 9 grams per serving. It cost $3.99 a pint.

Soy Delicious Vanilla Opened

I don’t like the flavor of this one at all. It has a nice soy flavor but, but on top of that the taste is like canned frosting– very sweet and sort of chemical-flavored. It has a bit of a slimy texture, too. Not my favorite so far. I only took three tastes of it in order to try it for the review and don’t think I’ll be eating this one. In fact, I think I’ll be getting the rest of the Tofutti and using that to get rid of this horrible taste in my mouth.

Sometimes, when I see movies or read books, I will realize partway through them that what I *thought* they were going to be about is not what they were actually about, and that what I thought they were going to be about was much cooler-- or where I thought the plot was going was much cooler, and so on.

This weekend, I saw 9. This cut is for pretty explicit spoilers )

Tofutti is the grandaddy of non-dairy ice cream. I remember back when I was a kid and my mom was big into health foods, we used to get tofutti a lot. So it’s been around since before real vegan products were readily available. I think it cost about $3.50 a pint.

Tofutti Vanilla

Tofutti Vanilla

I couldn’t get Tofutti in mint, so I got it in vanilla.

A half-cup serving has 210 calories and 117 from fat. It has 16 grams of sugar and is mainly made of soy. It does, however, have both corn syrup and corn oil in it.

Tofutti Vanilla Opened

Tofutti Vanilla Opened

I noticed on opening that it has a smell reminiscent of canned vanilla frosting– very sweet and a bit chemical-y. The flavor is very strong and doesn’t really taste as much like soy as I remember it tasting when I was a kid. It actually tastes sort of maple-y to me, which is weird, because I just went and looked at the label, and guess what isn’t in it? If you guessed maple syrup, you would be right.

It had an odd, light and fluffy texture, sort of like cool whip that has been frozen. And it doesn’t taste nearly as much like soy as most soy-based products.

I found it pleasant but not amazing. I would totally eat this if someone offered it to me, but I don’t think it would be my first choice to buy for myself.

I am also trying a coconut ice cream! It is called Luna & Larry’s Coconut Bliss. The flavor is mint galactica. One 1/2 cup serving has 206 calories and 129 calories from fat. There are 13 grams of sugar.

Coconut Bliss Mint Galactica

Coconut Bliss Mint Galactica

I am excited for this because I had a coconut ice cream with my parents a few weeks ago and I thought it was an excellent alternative to a dairy ice cream. There is no corn syrup in this ice cream, and there is organic chocolate with no dairy in it (it lists out the ingredients).

It actually says to remove from the freezer 5-10 minutes before eating. So now I guess I have to wait!

Coconut Bliss Mint Galactica

Coconut Bliss Mint Galactica

Okay, this seriously smells amazing. The mint is strong and minty, like when you chop mint in your kitchen, and it is white with tiny flecks of chocolate all over it. Like a galaxy! Like its name!

It is creamy and has a very strong flavor– strong mint, almost like a liqueur. I don’t really taste the coconut strongly, and the tiny flecks of chocolate melt in your mouth very quickly and they are very dark– no surprise, because there’s no milk in it!

This stuff is absolutely delicious. It’s a little pricey, over $5 a pint. But you know, if you don’t eat ice cream often, this stuff is decadent and delicious and I completely recommend it.

I couldn’t get Tofutti in mint, so I got it in vanilla.

A half-cup serving has 210 calories and 117 from fat. It has 16 grams of sugar and is mainly made of soy. It does, however, have both corn syrup and corn oil in it.

I noticed on opening that it has a smell reminiscent of canned vanilla frosting– very sweet and a bit chemical-y. The flavor is very strong and doesn’t really taste as much like soy as I remember it tasting when I was a kid. So in lieu of yogurt, I’m moving onto ice cream.

This weekend, while my parents were doing their vegan thing, we had vegan ice cream…and it was to die for. So I thought I would do some non-dairy ice creams. The first one I’m trying is Good Karma Organic Rice Divine.

Organic Rice Divine

Good Karma Organic Rice Divine

I’m trying to get all these ice creams in mint flavors, since that’s what we had this weekend.

A serving of this ice cream is 1/2 cup and it has 150 calories, 60 from fat. A serving has 15 grams of sugar– less than most servings of yogurt! It is all natural, no corn syrup. The label says that it is dairy free and lactose free, but it is also made on equipment that is also used for dairy items, so if that is of concern to any of you, well, at least you know, right?

Good Karma Organic Rice Divine Opened

It is very icy and very light in texture. The mint flavor is very strong and very sweet– it tastes sort of like a Junior Mint. You can tell that this is not ordinary whole milk ice cream, but it would be difficult to guess that it has no dairy if I didn’t know– I would probably just guess it was low-fat ice cream or ice milk. It seems to melt a little faster than dairy ice cream and gets a little gluey when it melts.

All in all, I would rate this a yum, though it is extremely sweet. I don’t know if this would be my favorite, but I would recommend trying it if you are looking for a good non-dairy ice cream.

I also tried Rice Dream, another rice-based frozen dessert. It has 160 calories and 55 from fat per serving, so in the same range. 12 grams of sugar, though, which is a significant enough difference. Again, no corn syrup– sweetened with agave and malt. It does warn of trace amounts of milk, due to the carob in the ice cream.

Rice Dream

Rice Dream

This is seeming silly to me that all these products that one would think would be specifically and most importantly non-dairy would all have dairy as their biggest risk for food infiltration.

This one has a very distinct and different flavor from the first. It is still very minty, but it tastes more like those flaky mint pillow mints than like a Junior Mint– it sort of has a more obvious rice flavor to it. I am not a fan of carob, and this is no exception– there is carob instead of chocolate for the chips, and it has a distinctly bitter taste– one of those things where it is not bad if you swallow it down fact, but who wants to do that when eating ice cream? I like to savor my ice cream and let it melt on my tongue. I think this carob is actually a bit more problematic than carob usually is for me. I usually don’t consider it unpleasant, just boring.

I feel like the Good Karma is definitely the better choice. I forgot to keep track of prices on these, but they were both in the $3-$3.50 range for a pint, so fairly inexpensive (cheaper than a pint of Haagen-Dazs). I think the Good Karma was more expensive by about $.20 but definitely worth it. It was a little on the sweet side for me but it wa delicious and refreshing. The chocolate was tastier whereas the carob in the Rice Dream was a bit noxious.
