I've heard this from a bunch of sources but I don't think that's a reasonable theory-- anyway, the seed is planted that Coulson WANTS them all to think he's dead, right? So it doesn't have to be an LMD. Fury just had to airlift Coulson out of there and tell everyone he was dead.
Several people I know have mentioned that they heard Tony say in passing that Coulson had an LMD or had reached the LMD on the helicarrier. Something like that. I missed the line myself, but I think that's why it's such a popular theory. I mean, there's so many ways that Fury could have pulled it off, even without the LMD.
I just feel like Nick would have known, and the level of upset he shows at Coulson being injured would be unreasonable if that had been an LMD.
I still maintain that as I saw the movie at a theater that had the little patter at the beginning with Coulson welcoming everyone to the movie that HE CAN'T INTRODUCE THE MOVIE IF HE'S DEAD.
I...I didn't get Coulson welcoming me to the movie D: I just got a very cute theater employee telling me that there were two bonus scenes and to enjoy.
We did NOT get someone telling us there were two bonus scenes and thus missed the shawarma one, although I am okay with that because we just would have left the theater hungry.
However, we did get Phil telling us all that we were about the see the assembly of the greatest superheroes known to man (plus Hawkeye) (Okay I added the Hawkeye part).
I think Coulson is dead as long as Joss Whedon writes the movies (Joss Whedon does love killing likable characters).... but once he stops, it'll be revealed it was an LMD and he may be a host for the Phoenix force (licensing pending).
1. We see Coulson pass out from lack of bloodloss.
2. Nick Fury "calls" the death but we never see the doctors after that.
3. The wound wasn't actually that bad.
4. Nick Fury uses cards that he got from the locker and drapes them in blood. That entire scene happens after Fury's "Whoops sorry for manipulating you guys!"
5. In the final scene of the movie on the heli-carrier, where Hill and Fury are discussing something, there is a long pan out of the bridge from overhead. You can clearly see a man approach Fury in a black suit. But visually, we know that 98% of the agents of SHIELD or whatever wear blue jumpsuits. Therefore, that man is Coulson.
