The Yogurt Diaries #9: Coconuttier
Jun. 18th, 2009 12:00 amToday, I gave So Delicious, the serious loser in yesterday’s Soy Battle, another shot at redemption. So Delicious makes coconut-milk-based yogurt in addition to soy-based yogurt, and today I tried one of those. Of course, the price tag is a bit more dear on these ones– $2.19 regular price compared to $1.09 for the regular soy yogurt. Would the price difference make a difference in the taste?

So Delicious Coconut Milk Yogurt Vanilla
The fat content in the coconut-milk yogurt is much, much higher than in any of the other yogurts I’ve tried. It’s 50 calories from fat out of 150 calories in the serving. It has 6 grams of saturated fat, so if you are stayng away from fatty foods, I don’t think you want to do this. It has 19 grams of sugar, which is closer in line with most of the “natural” yogurts, and less than the “big names.”
The containers are almost identical, but the coconut yogurt is kind of blobby and unappetizing when you open it. It has a kind of greyish-white color and it actually looks sort of lumpt in the container– not at all what you expect from yogurt.

The texture is still kind of light and insubstantial, like the So Delicious soy yogurt, but the flavor? Way better. I think this is a little too sweet, still, but the coconutty-ness really stands out even in a plain vanilla flavored yogurt, which is nice. I think this would definitely make a nice pina colada smoothie or something like that. The price is a little high for me to be like, yes, I would eat this all the time, and even if it were lower, I prefer something a little less sweet, but there’s no icky aftertaste here and the flavor is pleasant. If you’re a vegan or lactose intolerant and don’t really like a soy flavor in your fairy products, definitely give this a try.

Date: 2009-06-18 03:40 pm (UTC)I looked at my fave yogurt in the store yesterday - 31 grams of sugar!!! that is just super ridiculous.
I will scroll through some of your posts to see if I can come up with something I can eat which won't rot my teeth. even though "yogurt is supposed to be healthy/good for you!"
ridiculous. that's all I'm saying.
thanks!

or maybe not. the dairy is in Oregon.
I usually only go for vanilla flavored yogurt because the rest are too sweet. or goopey. I hate fruit-at-the-bottom yogurts. blech.
it's got a smooth, puddling-like texture. I like that about it.
the other yogurts had just as much or more sugar - from my brief look at some of the other labels. it was really an eye-opener.
but the PLAIN yogurt, which usually has reasonable amounts of sugar (dairy is a little sweet, naturally? I think?) taste pretty awful. sour. I guess maybe I could use something in bewteen. maybe that will be invented for me, trufax!
:P keep up the good work!

Date: 2009-06-18 09:29 pm (UTC)I tend to stay away from vanilla-flavoured yogurts because all of them wind up tasting like ass to me.
Pina colada yogurt -- man, I haven't been able to find that stuff in AGES.
I just bought a big tub of plain yogurt today & got some kiwis & bananas. I've got raw cane sugar, so I'll probably just chop up the kiwi & banana & mix it in with the yogurt & raw cane sugar, and it'll be good.

Date: 2009-06-26 08:20 pm (UTC)I also bought one of the coconut milk ones to try (the mango one specifically) and I wasn't impressed by it. Very sweet, and a little too sweet for me. And it's almost a full 50 cents more than what the chobani cost me.
