I got up this morning and came downstairs to discover that my mother was out in the snow.  “What is she doing?” I asked my father. “Building a snowman.”

“I wouldn’t say that,” said my father.

That is because she was building this:

So that is pretty awesome!

Also, I wanted to share something that my friend [info]serpentpixie made.  She made a video for her creative writing class that is just incredibly poetic and poignant and I love it. It is really inspiring me to think about ways I think about writing and multimedia.  Her LJ is mostly friends-only but she gave me permission to re-post the video so I could share it with you all!  I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

snowchicken!

My mom is amazing at this. When I was a kid, we had snow Smurfs, snow Cabbage Patch Kids, Snow Strawberry Shortcake, snow dinosaurs, and a few years ago we did a Snow Spongebob, but he fell down before I got a picture.

Your mom is awesome. There's a kids book in Snow Chicken. You should write it.

She really is! And that is an amazing idea. I just told my mom. I am trying to think of how that would work without being too much like other stories about snow-creatures!

It could be about a lost snow chicken trying to find its flock instead of any reference to magic or melting.

Ah, man! I love that. That's very sweet and adorable. Oh, question! Your main character in DHS, how long is her hair? I started drawing her before and then realized I didn't know!

Figure shoulder length. Long enough to need keeping out of her face (it's a tic she seems determined to display) but not so long as to be Mary Sue'ish.

Awesome chicken is awesome!

But that video made me tear up. Seriously. So poetic. So poignant. Every line just perfect.

I feel moved. Touched. As if I had lost something I never quite managed to remember.

But I do remember the smell of home.

Thank you so much for posting this Tea, and tell your friend that it was AWESOME.

And just finished watching the video. I know what you mean about making you rethink the relationship between writing and multimedia, it's like a poem which seemlessly integrates images as lines of the poem.

Yeah, the pictures are part of the story. It doesn't hurt that it's well-written, but I feel like the pacing and music and images just make it a different thing completely.

I'm glad you said that - I was so very cynical about whether it'd work properly, so I'm glad that people 'get it' as it were :)

Visual Poetry

Yeah no I think it worked excellently (: It's literally like a visual poem, which is something I've never heard of before!

Yeah, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it. Of course, I've seen slideshows with words set to music, but this sort of transcends that.

And I do like me some snow chicken.

My mother has been doing snow sculptures since I was a kid-- there's been Strawberry Shortcake, Smurfs, ET, a Cabbage Patch Kid, dinosaurs, football players-- a few years ago we built Spongebob Squarepants but he fell down before we got a photo.
