I am not always sure whether it is best to explain my characters' reasoning for what they do in exposition.

On one hand, I am afraid that my readers might miss their leaps in logic, which might make the story seem either convoluted or inaccessible.

On the other hand, I do not want to talk down to my readers.

I usually like explanations like that, unless I feel like the author is telling me the same thing twenty times. It only gets annoying when it's in a long enough chunk to distract me from the plot.
