I don't know if Sleeping Beauty is really a kids' movie in its intent; it's pretty dark and heavily stylized. It's mostly that adult Americans somehow got it into their heads that cartoons were for children, but I don't think that movie was in any way intended for a young audience.

I have Momo at home and you're the second person this week to mention it as a favourite. I might have to get my mother to send it over to me at this rate! I bought it simply because I adore The Neverending Story and hey, same author!

I keep meaning to go back and read some Bobbsey Twins since I never did.

Also, I had no idea The Prestige was a novel. I loved that film! Must read!

Momo is a lot like The NeverEnding Story because it has to do a lot with the power of stories and storytelling, but it's a much "smaller" story, more intimate. In a lot of ways, it reminds me of The Little Prince.

The Bobbsey Twins are a bit disturbing because they're extremely racist and sexist, but it would have been dishonest to not put one on my list, because they were my favorite series as a child.

The Prestige is a novel, but it's not nearly as good as the film. That's why I consider it one of the best film adaptations-- because the team on the film just did such a good job of cutting out everything unnecessary and distilling the story to its most basic and most meaningful parts. It's still worth reading, I think, to get a sense of how a movie can be better than the book. It's not a horrible book (Children of Men is), but it is just very flawed.

Re-reading a lot of my favourite childrens' books/authors, a lot of them seem to be the same! VERY different mentalities back in the 30s/40s/50s when most were written. It's also interesting reading books written during WWI or WWII that mention the wars... a LOT of racism in there!

It is freaking adorable. And I felt like my list needed at least one "totally and completely zany reinterpretation" adaptation. That one is great because it is incredibly faithful to the book even if it's in a completely different setting. Which is kinda neat. And many of the "modern reinterpretation" type movies don't work at all. That one does.
