We took Harker to the vet this morning to check him out and see if he was really dying or if this was something less serious than we thought.

It was as serious as we thought. The vet said his kidneys had shut down, and said we didn't need to do any tests: that the best thing to do would be to put him to sleep.

We said goodbye and called my dad so he could say goodbye on the phone. We brought him back in a little box so my dad could say goodbye for real and bury him.

We buried him at the foot of the red maple and marked his grave with a stone.

RIP, Jonathan Harker Cat.

"He just wanted to go outside so he could come inside so he could go out so he could come in again. That is all he ever wanted in life." --My daddy.

I'm sorry. Sometimes you really don't have a choice and this was one of those times.

He was loved though and he would have known that.

I'm so sorry.

That quote from your dad is awesome, though.

Thanks <3

And yeah, it's a family joke that whenever Harker was sitting at the door waiting for someone to let him out, my dad would ask him "Oh, do you want to come inside?"

It's really best. No more suffering. Now you get to celebrate his life. Your daddy seems well on his way to doing that. Made me laugh.

I think my dad is taking it harder than me or my mom. He was the main holdout, the one who never wanted to get a cat, and he freaking loved the cat.

That happened with my family's cat, too. I was the one who insisted on getting the cat. My dad doesn't normally liked cats but loved this one and was very sad when she went. My mom refuses to get another pet ever because she said losing her beloved dog when she was 19 and then losing our cat was enough of that sort of pain.

I think Harker had more personality then any kitty I've met. He was a good cat. Even when he was trying to eat me.

I'm sorry he's gone, but I'm glad he doesn't have to suffer anymore.

I'm so sorry for your and your family's loss.

At the same time, I am so relieved that things happened this way--I was worried that he was going to die a horrible and painful death, and I'm so glad that you didn't let that happen.

I would not have let that happen! That was the hardest part for me, was feeling like there was nothing I could do to help him. Now I know I helped him and that was the best I could do.

I'm sorry if I made it sound like I was saying you'd do that. I didn't mean to do that. I just worry; I have a really soft spot for animals.

How lucky he was to have humans who loved him as much as you and your family. :) Harker was an absolute delight the few times I met him and I'm glad he was your kitty. Hope you and your family feel better.

*hugs* At least they didn't drag it out. You're in my thoughts, and I hope Harker winds up in a kitty afterlife where he's happy and well-nourished and gets to go outside and come inside as much as he wants.
