3) I am wearing that, too.

But that is not why I am here today. Today, I am here to tell you about something I meant to post about on, um, Monday, and didn't for some reason.

Because Monday I received the results of my Strong Interest Inventory



So, the Strong is this multiple choice test that, like, is supposed to tell you fascinating (ooh, fascinating!) things about yourself by comparing your likes and dislikes to those of people who are "highly satisfied" with their jobs.

It tests you in six areas to check your interests in those "themes": artistic, investigative, conventional, realistic, social, and enterprising.

The funny thing is, I didn't score really high in any of them. Although artistic is much higher than the others, but it is still in the "moderate" category. My lowest is "Enterprising" which I apparently have a very low interest in. This means that I don't actually care about making any money, haha. Not really, but it means that I don't care for selling things or engaging in traditional business.

After that, there is a section where they go through actual activities you like and dislike.
My Top Five:
Writing/Mass Communication Yes.
Social Sciences Um, sure. I like figuring things out and looking at communities and stuff. I like history. I really liked religion and urban studies when I was in school.
Visual Arts Well, we know this one.
Mechanics & Construction This is true. I really like building things. I don't really do it as much as I used to but I built my own really complicated dollhouse when I was a kid; I had a pulley system in my bedroom to do things like open my closet and my blinds, I made dolls out of scrap metal, so on, so forth. Used to sew a ton.
Science Really? I was a crack Physics student in high school and the first kid to ever make the finals of the NYS Science Congress with a project in behavioral science. But I kind of gve up on hard science after high school, so this one was kind of, um, surprising-interesting.

Finance & Investing
Human Resources & Training
Marketing & Advertising

So, yeah, uh, no selling things for tea. This whole thing is one bit "Tea, do not go into business!"

Man, this is getting long. So then it does your top ten Occupations. These aren't occupations that you "should" go into, as the test repeatedly warns, but the ones that you matched interests with people who are already in those professions and liked them.

College Instructor Okay, yeah, I can see this. Academia is one of the places I've been most comfortable, although college/university politics p whaiss me off.
Computer Systems Analyst Err, say what? I don't even know what one of these does.
Photographer I like taking photos, but as a profession? Not sure.
Biologist BIOLOGIST? This one sort of really surprised me, because when I was 12/13, my favorite thing in the world was splicig e. coli genes and making the fun little gels of the new mutated DNA. That's technically genetics, not biology, but they're close. This one gave me pause.
Librarian To me, librarians are fat, naggy old ladies who are mean to you because that is what the ones in my local library were. Although I could go all Party Girl and be a glam librarian.
Translator This would be fun...if I had any facility with a language besides English.
University Instructor See College Instructor
Attorney I could never see myself as an attorney. When I was in high school mock trial, I always played the witnesses.
ESL Instructor Maybe with adults. I am not big on teaching kids. Not whole groups of them. Maybe a couple at a time.
Editor Yeah, I could do this.

The things it told me I had nothing in common with? Phys ed teachers, Athletic trainers, Realtors, Physical Therapists, Practical Nurses. Um, yeah. Some of those I actually had NEGATIVE in common with! Awesome!

Other high ones were Sociologist, Psychologist,Artist, and Musician

Then it goes through some work styles stuff. I marginally prefer working alone, but, ironically, I prefer collaborating on the actual work. Yeah. I am pretty much right on the line for preferring research v. practical learning. I prefer being directed to directing, which is true. And I hate taking risks.

Now I get to have a phone interview about the results. It is awesome that I am getting all of this for free!

Ooh, we took this test last year in English class. I tied between Enterprising and Artistic. (Both scores were pretty high, IIRC) It's really interesting, seeing what "themes" relate to what careers. :)

I had to take the Strong test recently, because I'm in career counseling. But we're going over the results next session. We went over the results to my Myers-Briggs (or... something) test first, analyzing my personality. I got to keep papers. 'Twas very interesting.

I was in career counseling and paying a crapload of money and it sucked. Basically, here is my career counseling experience:

TEA: Hi! I am trying to find a career that is creative and involves drawing and writing.
COUNSELOR: Hmm, take the MBTI. I don't need to look at your work or anything.
TEA: Here is my MBTI. It says I'm an INTP!
COUNSELOR: Hmm, you should be a statistician.
TEA: And how does that relate to writing and drawing and being creative?
COUNSELOR: Uhh, shut up and give me more money! Statistician!

So now I'm getting counseling for free from my former college and it rocks.

Yeah. I'm getting counseled for free because I volunteered for a program where I get counseled by someone who's not yet a counselor but is learning to be one. Basically, I'm someone's guinea pig, but I don't mind, because the girl is nice and the service is freeeeeeeeee!

Yeah, I think I was right on the borderline for the T/F one, and close for P/J. I wasn't too far on the I side, and I think I was a lot of N. The guy was surprised, he said most young people are really far on most sides, but he was also an idiot since he kept telling me to be a statistician.

That is awesome with the free counseling, though. One of the things I learned from my first job counselor was that I could probably be a pretty good job counselor. Or at least better than him.

Oh, wait, I actually just checked. E/I I was very, very close on. S/N I was WAY on the N side, and T/F, I was WAY on the T side. J/P I was actually exactly even on. But it's one of the ones that if you tie, you're supposed to err on the side of P.

I'm an assistant at my college's career center and lots of people forget that most schools will offer lifetime career services and will keep your records including letters of recommendation on file for ten years or more! I can't wait to go in and do all the stuff in a few years because the counselors know me. :D

Ooh, sounds interesting. I'm tempted to go to the Career Development Center on my campus now. The thing is, though...I know what I want to do. I'd just be going to learn more about myself from the cool test. >_> Would that be considered abusing the system?

An HR advisor is something that would be useful to me. I am sort of surprised I scored so low on that, since I think that's a job that involves a lot of interacting with people and figuring out what they're best at and such, but hey.

Ha! I definately just took this test in Careers class and got pretty similar results. I scored highest in investigative and artistic and lowest in entrerprising.

(And I'm an INFP. We're one letter different, woo!)

And apparently the T/F score is one that they think is somewhat biased based on gender, and almost all women get F, while almost all men get T.

So I never took a test like this but it sounds really fun! But I did finally talk to the head of the English department at school about what I could do with an English Lit. major and what I'm interested in and she told me that what it sounds like I want to do is work for a literary agency and I totally would never have thought of that (not sure why, but oh well). So yay for people doing career type things!

Yeah. I know Tor Books is in NY and does a lot of internships-- delizia did one a while back, you might want to poke her and see if she can give you a contact there. Tor is a publishing company, not an agency, but they're one of the few major publishing houses that still takes unsolicited manuscripts, so it might be a good experience. Definitely look into interning with a publisher or agency.

I definitely took the same test freshman year of highschool.

They told me I wanted to be a dentist. I'm scared of dentists. :(
