Comic: How I do My Hair

A lot of people have asked me about how the Curly Girl thing that I started doing this summer (Read About It Here!) has been going and what I do on an every day basis to keep my hair clean AND shampoo-free. so here is a comic explaining the regular steps that I take now that I've settled into a routine.


HOW I DO MY HAIR

ONCE A MONTH:

Panel 1: Pouring honey into hand
Start with a big dollop of honey.

Panel 2: Tea in shower, singing lyrics to Lady Gaga's Poker Face
Tea: I wanna hold em' like they do in Texas please
Work it into wet hair. Use more if needed.

Panel 3: Tea in shower, from back.
Rinse out under warm water.

Panel 4: Tea wrapped in towel
Tea: Make sure to rinse out all the honey or your hair will be sticky!

ONCE A WEEK:

Panel 5: Tea in shower, singing lyrics to Lady Gaga's Poker Face while putting in conditioner
Tea: Fold em' let em' hit me raise it baby stay with me
Scrub scalp with lots of super-cheap silicone-free conditioner

Panel 6: Comb in hair that is pulled straight
Comb through until it feels like your wrist will fall off

Panel 7: Tea with head under faucet.
Tea: And baby, brr, this water's cold
Rinse out under cold water.

Panel 8: Tea wrapped in towel
I used Suave Naturals Coconut for this step!

EVERY DAY:

Panel 9: Fingers running through loosely curled hair
Detangle wet hair with fingers

Panel 10: Tea putting conditioner on hair
Glob on expensive silicone-free conditioner

Panel 11: Tea combing hair
Comb through and leave in

Panel 12: Tea wrapped in towel
Tea: I use various conditioners from Nature's Gate!

Panel 13: Tea putting oil in hair and singing more
Tea: Check this hand 'cause I'm Mar-Vel-Ous!
Add natural oils like jojoba or castor oil

Panel 14: Tea holding up a tee-shirt
Wrap in an old tee shirt while dressing

Panel 15: Tea dressed with towel still on head
Forget to remove towel when leaving for work

Panel 16: Tea dressed, with finished hair
Tea: This last step is only for experts!

I'm a Curly Girl too! I never got the hang of the tshirt thing though :(

I shut my toilet and lay the tee shirt on top of it with the sleeves pointed toward me. Then I put my head in the center of the tee shirt. Then I pull up the back, and then the front, and tie the sleeves together in the back.

As a wavy-haired person I find this fascinating. Now, I'm probably missing something that was talked about before, but why get rid of shampoo all together? I totally get cutting down or omitting shampoo for the health of your hair, but I think my scalp would freak out without at least a weekly shampoo. I want to try the honey thing... but I'm not sure I could stand making my hands all honey sticky during the application process (I think I'm part raccoon)

Not everybody needs to cut shampoo all together. But if your hair is very dry, which curly hair often is, getting rid of it is good. It means never putting any sulfates in your hair.

The honey actually gets less sticky the second water touches it-- it dissolves very quickly, so it is not as ick as you expect!

Definitely try it! I've been doing it for a few months and I love it! I have heard a few people get greasy hair the first few weeks-- I didn't, but I have heard people say to give it two weeks to a month to see what your hair will look like doing it this way. I am so happy.

I've been having a hard time with a greasy spot on the back of my head, but I discovered that my bodywash was sulfate free, so I used that. I'm operating on the assumption that my hair is only wavy, not curly...

I'm kind of frustrated with the process, but I know I haven't sat down and done totally proper research on it yet.
