I know a lot of people on my Flist were talking about this, and it just came up on my news reader:

Laura Dekker Disappears.

This is that girl who was trying to circumnavigate the globe at 14 who was blocked by the Dutch government who said she had to wait until she was 16, mainly because Dutch law requires children to be in school until that age. She apparently just vanished, supposedly on her own steam.

I just saw that one. I'm fairly well convinced it was Dad's idea since he seems to be the driving force behind this trip.

Yeah, same here. It's like, REALLY? Pardon me for being skeptical and all.

We've got an Australian girl who's trying to be the youngest to sail around the world, at sixteen: Jessica Watson.

When I first heard about the story, I thought all power to her, but how could you watch and encourage this sort of endeavour with your children *without* worrying the whole way? Call me old-fashioned, but I'd rather see my kids achieve something other than fame/glory/world records when they're so young and full of promise.
