A couple points of interest:
May. 24th, 2010 11:04 pm1) I know a bunch of my friends have or have recently started personal "official" blogs that aren't on community blog sites like LJ/Dreamwidth. Do you want me to link you on my personal blog? Do you have a friend I should be linking to? Let me know!
2) I recently turned my Netflix account back on after five years. Recommend movies that I must see.
3) I love you all!

Date: 2010-05-25 04:02 am (UTC)I kind of like everything. Seriously.

Date: 2010-05-25 04:37 am (UTC)As you probably know, I'm a major horror movie fan, so there are a lot of film reviews in my LJ you can take your pick from. But lifting from my recent post about three movies to introduce you to the genre, Rec 1+2 (NOT the American remake which isn't a patch on the original), Let the Right One In and Dead Snow are a really broad spectrum and all fantastic films in their own right. However, since not everyone is as much into blood and guts as I am, I'm loathe to list any more that I consider must see unless you're interested because the genre just may not be your thing.

Date: 2010-05-25 05:12 am (UTC)Really, really obscure horror movies that I like because of their character depictions are also Gag (very low budget but the script makes up for it and it features one of my favourite villains of all time. It's so rare to encounter a psychopath who is genuinely psychopathic), Storage (an Aussie film about a youth who goes and works in his uncle's storage facility after the death of his dad and suspects that some of the tenants use their lock ups to conceal illegal activities) and Slashers (a reality TV show where you go in and face serial killers in a maze that is heavily stacked against the contestants who'll win $1 million if they survive the entire show).
Really, when you look at my taste in films, a lot of my Idol entries make a lot more sense :oP

Date: 2010-05-25 05:20 am (UTC)And thanks for the compliment. I'm seriously considering what I want to do with some of my favourite Idol pieces. I really explored fiction this season in a way I didn't last time round and it's reminded me that I'm really not that bad at it, even if it's been many years since I wrote any.

Date: 2010-05-25 02:48 pm (UTC)You should write more fiction; you are good at it! And I think a couple of your pieces could probably be expanded into longer short stories.

Date: 2010-05-25 08:40 pm (UTC)And thank you for your comments about my fiction. I have a big problem with basic concepts, so I probably need to hire Gary to provide me with a prompt on a weekly basis! Having said that, with the stories that I've written for Idol, I could probably sort them into themes and then write more in each section. As long as I have some kind of starting point, I'm all right - another reason why open topics are so tough and why I themed mine this time and byed to avoid the first one.
ok

Date: 2010-05-26 05:04 pm (UTC)The Rob Zombie recommendations I agree with. I loved House of 1,000 Corpses et al and was one of the few who utterly hated the second Halloween. Halloween 1 = <3 number 2 = hate I understood the symbology, but in the words of the South Park guys, I watch movies to be entertained, I was not entertained. Rob shouldn't expect his fans to think...lol. While many of us are intelligent, that isn't what we're hanging around him for ;)

Date: 2010-05-26 05:08 pm (UTC)I did love Sherlock Holmes, though. The RDJ version, I haven't watched the one with the dinosaurs yet. I haven't seen the second Halloween, so I haven't the faintest idea what you're talking about.
I don't watch movies to be entertained, though. I watch movies to make me think about literary tropes and cultural resonance.

Date: 2010-05-26 05:35 pm (UTC)I didn't get to see more than a part of a trailer, so I didn't see anything really racist in Ninja Assassin... That or I don't know racism when I see it. Just really cool special effects that made me happy. I love martial arts movies, and the guy who played the lead, Rain, was gorgeous. There are times when I am led by my baser instincts and said instincts are very happy.
Dinosaurs in Sherlock Holmes...oh wow.
