But I was starting to notice an uncomfortable pattern, so I decided to plug in some famous authors.

That is suspect, I think.

It seemed like, when I'd google looking for Top X Authors, I'd get people that you were pointing out as missing (Toni Morrison, Agatha Christie, and so on.), so I would rule out that list as being used in the meme.

So, perhaps this is more like top authors according to the meme writer?

I think he used those lists, but picked and chose who he wanted from them. Which is why it's so limited.
