SINCE THERE WASN'T AN OPTION, I sometimes eat salads for meals, but if I get a side salad, I eat that before my main or second side. I often eat a side salad + another side at restaurants.
I need a recipe for everything. I think it's because I used to eat a lot food because I felt I had to and not because I wanted to. Now that I'm trying to find what tastes good it's hard to know what flavours taste good together, if that makes any sense :P My mind is playing tricks on my tongue or something.
It makes sense, I just mean it's not really something there are a lot of recipes FOR because people don't really make salads according to recipes most of the time; you just get whatever veggies look nice and fresh and mix them up.
One of my favorite salads to make contains baby spinach, shredded carrots, dried cherries or dried cranberries, some sort of nut/seed (sunflower seeds or walnuts are my personals faves) with a splash of balsamic vinegar & olive oil.
I really don't think I eat enough salads to properly answer all this, but I gave it a try! I never have salad as my whole meal, I tend to find them dull and not filling, but that's probably because i've never had a really decent salad. I should probably eat more salad...
I am mostly impartial to salads, but there are some places that have DELICIOUS ones that I can happily eat for my entire meal. I love crispy chicken on a salad, but sadly this practically negates the health benefits :
I said "8" for like because the exactly-right salad is an 11 out of 10, and most salads are at least a 6, but a bad salad is essentially non-food to me.
"Bad salad" has the operational definition of "salad made with iceberg lettuce that is more white (or worse, BROWN) than green". Also a potential problem: I am severely sensitive to MSG, and many salad dressings (and some croutons, etc.) contain MSG. This means unless I know a dressing is "safe" I will have oil and vinegar, or I will just season with salt or salsa.
I am a fan of the "SCA feast salad" style: baby field greens and/or spinach, lots of fresh herbs, salt, fresh-ground black pepper, and olive oil. OM NOM NOM. I also like the ones that are served at Middle Eastern restaurants with tahini-based dressing, the various salads of the Panera/Bruegger's "soup and salad combo" offerings, and for a non-leafy variant, I LOVE Indian kutchumber salad, which is diced cucumber and tomato and sometimes onion.
I wanted an "all of the above" option for what part of the meal the salads are! If I am setting my own courses, I do prefer the European-style between main course and dessert. I chose "with a meal" because most of my salad-eating lately has been as part of the soup-and-salad combo things. And now I'm really wishing I had some good field greens and tahini.
Favorite green = spinach and bib lettuce! Don't forget the bibbage!
My favorite salad combo is probably bib lettuce & spinach with red onions, walnuts, strawberries, mandarin orange slices, blue cheese & balsamic vinaigrette. I could eat that shit FOREVER.
I'm a fatty/my favorite option wasn't included: eat it as the main dish with a side soup. :3
I went through eating leaves I didn't like for years before realizing two things: 1) I don't like lettuce, 2) it's all about spinach. I used to use the leaves as a delivery method for delicious dressing, though. Heh.
Living in a high vegan population has made my salad bar options AMAZING. THERE ARE ROASTED POTATOES. And every kind of bean! Edamame!!! YUMMMM. And beets, and pasta salads, and quinoa, and corn, and green beans, and 2309524 other veggies I don't find to be standard at an omni salad bar. Nom nom nom!
If I have a salad it'll be my main, and usually one with chicken in it.
Potato salad is an awesome side. But my favourite salad EVER is fruit salad. I used to make fruit salads to go with my sandwiches at lunch! Watermelon, pineapple, kiwi fruit, peach, nectarine, strawberries, grapes, cherries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, mango - as many as were in season :D
