Today, I saw Slumdog Millionaire.

And I got a new icon.

When I look back at my list of movies I saw this year, I try to find one that even comes close to this one. The only one I would consider near its equal is probably The Counterfeiters.

If you don't know what this movie is about, haven't heard of it, it's about an 18 year old telemarketing assistant in Mumbai who manages to get all the way to the last question on the Indian version of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire." The story is a Cinderella-style fairy tale, but the thing that I love is that it's able to evoke that fairy-tale spirit while being exceedingly down to earth and very realist. The only magic in the story is really how events align, by coincidence, by matter of fact, simply in the course of life, to put the character where he is. And yet it manages to feel magical, surreal.

Go see it!
