Hey! It’s a comic! By me and Rina.

We did this thing where we drew two comics– one that had to be only things that could happen in real life, and one that had to be completely fantastic. Guess which one this is?

So, I wanted to write down some stuff about the dream I had the night before last.

I have long and involved dreams )

In waking news, yesterday was AWESOME. I went over to Rina's house to color a cartoon for her, and she paid me in dinner. So usually when I go over, I pack up my knapsack with liquor and other delectable things (like sometimes sorbets or whatnot) and bring them over and mix drinks. But I didn't because we were going to dinner and figured Rina would want to get the coloring done and just get out the door, and then I got there, and Rina asks if I want a drink. My only regret is that I didn't bring over some of the pickled cherries and my bottle of Root. But Brendan has these bottles of Royal Rose syrups, which are phenom, and some wormwood bitters I hadn't tried, so I played around with those, and then went up and did some coloring, and then we walked a few blocks to this new restaurant in our neighborhood called SALT & FAT. Yes, that is the name.

This place was seriously the best meal I have had in my neighborhood. The only problem is they don't have a bar, although they have a great spot for one should they wish to remedy this (they should). First off, they give you pork fat cooked popcorn as soon as you walk in, and, um. Unlimited little bags of hot pork fat popcorn. Rina and I shared a bunch of small plates; we had scallops and meatballs and little porkbelly BLT Beijing kao ya style buns, and omg oxtail. Seriously good oxtail with seriously good roasted mushrooms. And a couple of beers, and we chatted a while about writing and stuff and oh my god that oxtail. So we are definitely going to be going back there. If they had a bar, I don't know if the rest of you would hear from me ever again. I need to go back with my camera and do a proper review.

Oh, also: I wrote this excellent post about ice cream and dinosaurs night before last but a couple people said it didn't show up on their flist. So I'm posting a link: ice cream and dinosaurs. It also has my friend Steve's excellent old timey folksy band playing Folsom Prison Blues.

So, on Thursday night, Rina and I did our comic jam thing.

We decided that we were going to do one jam where we could do whatever we please, as usual, and one where we WERE NOT ALLOWED TO DEVIATE FROM REALITY. That meant, like, no talking severed heads or things like that because that doesn’t happen in real life (they tell me).

Here they are for your perusal! Can you guess which is which?

Eek, I have been failing so bad at posting! I am busy busy with so many things lately. Rina and I did another jam comic session a while back, and we did these awesome comics. The rule for these ones was just that we started with titles and had to keep on the theme of the title!

I fail so much! Last week, Rina and I had a drawing night and we did two jam comics. She remembered to post them; I didn’t! I blame the fact that by Friday evening, I had done something horrible to my neck and was in abject pain all weekend. Fail!

Anyway, here they are. The first one is a normal jam. The other one is a tic-tac-toe jam. Tom Hart sent me a couple tic-tac-toes that he and Matt Madden did, so we decided to try it! Rina was Os and I was Xes

Rina and I haven’t had a Draw Nite in a few weeks, and we finally had one again last night!

Apart from having really good Chinese takeout and Sazeracs, and chatting a lot about drawing and writing, we drew this:

The Ambulance

Poor Toto!

So, yesterday, Rina asked me to come over to watch the TV show "Ghost Hunters" with her, because they were featuring a lighthouse where she and Brendan once stayed. We were meaning to draw as well. but mostly we drank wine and watched the pretty thunderstorm and Rina made some kickass soup.

But I did draw Rina looking out the lighthouse window! With part of the impromptu Lighthouse Rap she performed (the part I could remember enough to write down).

I keep having more stuff to post about than I actually get around to posting, boo. More later!

This cocktail has a story.

Last night, when Rina came over, I offered to make her a drink. She said she liked Manhattans and drinks of that ilk, so I pulled out some bourbon and vermouth (Punt E Mes is my red vermouth of choice).

While I was doing this, I opened up a bottle of Fernet-Branca and asked her to smell it, toying with the idea of mixing it into the drink. But Fernet-Branca is one of those things that people either love or hate, so I didn’t want to put it in the drink if she wasn’t going to like it.

She took a sniff, and said “that smells like my childhood!”

Rina went on to talk about her Italian family and their cakes, which, and I agree from my experience with my Italian family, are always covered in delicious icing, but when you get to the cake part, it’s always drenched in liquor to the point that for a child who is craving sugary sweetness, it’s inedible.

So I made her a drink. Tonight, I remade the drink for my mother, who said it was “a better Manhattan.” It’s not as sweet, and the Fernet-Branca is a much more sophisticated flavor than, oh, maraschino cherries.

Here it is for you:

sensory memory

Ingredients:
3 oz bourbon (I used Eagle Rare last night, Buffalo Trace tonight)
1 oz red vermouth (Punt E Mes)
1/2 oz Fernet-Branca

Instructions:
–Pour all ingredients into a shaker with ice, shake
–Serve in a chilled martini glass
(easy!)

In other proportions, served on the rocks or shaved ice, this is called a Fanciulli Cocktail, but I use a lot more bourbon here. And no ice.

Last night, Rina came over to play! And by play, I mean draw.

When I was a little kid, my favorite game would be to sit with my friends and both draw the same thing at the same time.

None of my friends liked this game. They would usually get bored after the first one. I have a sketchbook from when I was a kid, where I used to have “theme pages.” There was a clown page and a cheerleader page and some other pages, but those are the ones I remember. I would ask my friends to add their doodles of clowns or cheerleaders or whatever to the appropriate page. Some of them humored me. Some of them didn’t even go that far.

But tonight, Rina came over and we drew things!

Rina has been doing this neato series of comic versions of tweets, and she worked on some of those. Then I did some, too, but mostly, I drew pictures of Rina drawing! And here I will reveal the secret, centuries-old process by which her comic tweets are made! It has been passed down for generations and protected by a secret order of sworn guardians.

Rina is freaking awesome, y’all. It’s so cool to be able to draw with someone who has so much talent and skill and is willing to talk about her art and pass on advice and knowledge so openly. Plus, she is just generally fabulous. Go check out our comic tweets on her blog!

So this is a bit delayed but last weekend I went to the NCS Reuben Weekend for the first time and it was kind of awesome. For the uninitiated, the Reubens are like the Oscars of comics, and pretty much the only comic event that people have to dress up for. It’s in a different city every year, and this year, it was in Jersey City, right across the Hudson!

The highlight of the weekend for me was really getting to meet all kinds of people whom I talk to on the phone every day for the first time! That was kind of amazing. I finally met Hilary Price, whom I have been working with on stuff for a year and a half now, and I was sitting next to her when she won her award for best comic panel! And I met dozens of other people who were all totally awesome (I am not listing out lots of folks for fear I might forget people) and had an amazing time. (By the way, King Features cartoonists swept Best Comic Panel, Best Comic Strip [Zits], and Cartoonist of the Year)

My friends Shaenon and Andrew came in from California and I got to see them for the first time in two years, and then they spent the week with me, which was pretty great!

Friday was a cocktail party which was mostly full of introductions and cookies! Then Saturday, Brendan, Rina, Alex, Alex’s boyfriend Duncan, Terri and I went into the city, had a nice walk around and went out for really amazing pizza.

Then we went back to the hotel, got all dolled up and went to the Reubens, which started off with an hilarious Godfather parody starring lots of famous cartoonists, and ended with drinks at the hotel bar and then the afterparty, where I mixed drinks and stayed up till a very embarrassingly late time of night, mostly hanging out with Jay and his girlfriend Kate, who were both super awesome.

Then Sunday, Rina, Brendan, Jay, Kate and I went for a nice walk along the Hudson, and went back in time for Rina to participate on the Six Chix panel. And then we went home!

All in all, it was a really cool weekend and I got to dress up and meet all kinds of awesome people and spend time with awesome friends!

Me, Rina, Brendan Me & Shaenon
