Lost Wax!

I was all set to do a LOST post when the show started tonight, and then about two minutes into it, I just couldn't really get my stride. Let's face it, I think everyone here knows that LOST is not really the show it was the first season, but last season finally started to feel like it was getting back on track; it wasn't quite so soap-opera ridiculous, there was more sci-fi type stuff in the show again. More Tempest references, among other things. It was like they finally got a writing team reassembled that got all the references the first season writers had stuck in.

This season premiere, and I don't think this will spoil the show for anyone who's not yet watched it, just felt like a rehash episode. They have the hour long special to re-introduce the characters and plot, and you KNOW it's getting convoluted when I actually was surprised by things I had forgotten from previous seasons. Then the two hour premiere...didn't really set up anything we didn't already know. It was more like a three hour refresher episode instead of just one.

Also, I was disappointed that they didn't find the hatch when Kelvin was there. I was so waiting for a Kelvin cameo. Boo. Okay, that's a spoiler. Sorry.

I still have high hopes for this season and next, because I feel like they can have a directed plan and know where they're going now, and that I am looking forward to-- it's one of the things that I always liked about the 4400, is that that show always felt very carefully planned out, and LOST wasn't as good when it was too open-ended. I just felt like the show has gotten so complicated that it took way too long to set things up in this opener.

Instead, I will tell you about what I did today! Today, at lunch, I went to get my chin and lip waxed. Now, one thing you might not know about me is that, well, I have massive old lady whiskers. Like, not enough to be a bearded lady, but I can certainly sport the ol' five o'clock shadow. I could totally be a Marlboro man or something like that. I have tried waxing at home, but I always got massive acne, and for years, I've just tweezed. I've gotten my eyebrows done once before, but...well, I felt sort of silly, putting all that effort into changing the shape of my eyebrows? Seriously. But I know it made a difference, and I wondered if it would work on my chin and lip so I wouldn't have to tweeze so much.

The lady was very nice and very efficient, and very worried when she finished that my skin was so red, so I assured her that that was normal, and went my merry way. The redness was gone within an hour, but I will remember that if I try it again, not to do it in the middle of the day. Way home from work would be better.

Now, here's the trouble. It got rid of all the nice, soft white peach-fuzzy hair that to me is completely innocuous and unoffensive, but it didn't get rid of the ugly black whiskers. I had to tweeze those myself when I got home, and to make matters worse, I don't know if it makes the whiskers more visible, but it certainly makes them more evident when I rub my chin, because now it's not just some coarser spots and finer spots, it's like, smooth skin, smooth skin-- GIANT OLD LADY WHISKER. And I may just be paranoid, but I think I can feel them growing in! I have already tweezed my chin twice tonight since I got home from work.

So I'll see if it keeps the hairs down to a minimum at least, and maybe try a different waxing place to see if it's just that this one wasn't very good, but my first impression of waxing is not so impressed. I did notice, though, that it leaves significantly fewer bumps or red spots than shaving (YES I HAVE TRIED SHAVING MY FACE, SHUT UP), so I am actually kinda considering trying a bikini wax sometime. But I'm a little disappointed that this didn't more completely decimate my old lady whiskers.

Oh god... don't get me started on chin hair. And neck hair is the worst EVER. I was thinking of waxing at home, and now your post has made me wonder if it's worth the effort.

I've tried waxing at home, and I really think waxing is one of those things that takes tons of practice to be good enough to do it, let alone do it on yourself. I don't have a neck hair, problem, just chin, but apparently my chin hair is too thick for the wax!

OH THANK GOODNESS I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM.

Er.

I think it is one of those things that everyone has a problem with but no one admits because everyone thinks they're the only one with the problem!

Is it really that much better? One of my cousins has told me to try laser, but then I read reviews for laser places online and there are all these horror stories about discolored skin.

I think it's a case of the horror stories standing out among everything else. My skin is relatively dark, and it still worked out just fine. They just tell you to use sunscreen, but I forget half the time >_> The permanence aspect is really the best part. It does hurt though, but I'm guessing not as much as waxing :P

The whole waxing hurting thing is a myth. It hurts for about a second the same way it hurts when you rip off a bandaid, but it's not NEARLY as painful as bandaid ripping. How much does lasering cost?

Except we already knew that was going to happen!

Also, I'mma screen this comment cause this post doesn't have any spoilers and I have folks on my flist who have been watching from the beginning.

I cannot believe I am posting about this on LJ.

I wax my upper lip at home, because the hair there is comparatively fine, but I have about 6 old lady whiskers that I have to tweeze again and again and again. To make matters worse, one of them grows from a mole on the side of my neck, just like some kind of fairy tale wicked witch. URGH.

If I could afford it I would totally laser the mofos. Instead, I have a pair of super-posh tweezers in like, every room of the house.

I have the super-posh tweezers, and I TOTALLY have the old lady whisker in the mole on my chin, too! The problem is that mine kind of number in the dozens-- way more than six. I actually have a developed callus on the side of my finger from plucking them in places where I forgot my tweezer. :-(

*sigh* I totally missed this. Do you think they'll rerun it next week before the new episode? For some reason, I thought it wasn't 'til next week. I already bought the Gossip Girl season pass, I don't need to buy another...

ABC.com always has the episodes up for free the day after they run. In HD. ABC really has the most amazing website.

You could try hair removal cream? I've used it a few times on my upper lip. The hair there used to be less noticeable, but since I started taking the pill I swear it got worse. Or maybe just 'cos I got a bit older, not sure, but either way, the hair removal cream works and they don't come back for ages. Be careful not to leave it on too long though, 'cos skin on your face is more sensitive than on your legs.

I've used it before; it makes me break out and the hair doesn't come off!

I have no comment on the chin hairs! All I know is I am way too scared of waxing anywhere ever. :( *iz chickenshit*

I kind of love waxing. Mmm, aloe gel. I get some old lady whiskers, but I think those are more noticeable to me than anyone else.

Also, yeah, birth control would level out your hormones. Yay testosterone!

I have a lot of dark hair everywhere, but luckily I only have to wax my upper lip (so I can do it at home now, which is a relief). I don't know about chin hair - mine is kinda dark but it's also really fine so it's not too noticeable. Maybe try bleaching? In my experience that hurts more than waxing but it may be more effective and your pain tolerance is probably greater than mine.

I would suggest trying a different place, just to make sure that it wasn't the wax or your skin that day or something.

Yeah, I was going to try a different place in a week or two. Bleaching makes me break out-- I've tried pretty much everything you can do in the privacy of your own home with kinda mediocre effects. Believe it or not, shaving still seems to be the best option, but that always makes me feel a little weird.

I never got to the possible breaking out part of bleaching...I kept it on for thirty seconds and started crying. :/ Have you tried those electric shock things? I am not really sure what they are, actually, but I know that Sephora sells them sometimes. They shock the follicle or something...it was a busy day when I last set foot inside a Sephora with them, so I cannot be more specific. (Anyway, I think they were like $200 which is a lot of money if you don't know what the results will be like.)

Hope you find something. Besides shaving, anyway.

Myself, I got the moustache action going on. I used to pluck, but then I gave up and started shaving. Home waxes and hair creams are of the devil.

I think the most worthwhile part of this episode was Hurley's island dissapearing sound effect. "Bloup!"

Ugh. The random facial hair thing is SO annoying. I don't have it as bad as my mom did, which is a relief, but I do get these annoying big black chin hairs that look like pubic hairs. *hate*
