Hello, my lovely friendslist!

Today is the day the [livejournal.com profile] therealljidol poll closes. There are only eight people left, and two of those people are going home.

I am currently lagging back in second-to-last place, and that would mean I would be pretty much out of the game, which would be sadness!

So, if you have the time and wherewithal (I know ticking boxes is very difficult and exhausting), I would muchly appreciate if you could tick the box next to where it says [livejournal.com profile] the_vernacular! You can read my entry this week, a story about fictional bluestockings, here.

[Poll #1753938]

And, since he is in last place, which is very sad indeed because he is so beloved and squishable, It would be extra awesome if you could tick off a vote for [livejournal.com profile] alephz as well.

I really want to ask you to vote for everyone, because I thought pretty much everything this week was awesome, but [livejournal.com profile] alephz is my fellow tribute from District 12.

But do read the entries if you have time, and tick some boxes! Every time you tick a box, an angel gets its wings!

Thank you, you are all the most best!

...And may the odds be ever in your favor!

<3 <3 Have a happy Thursday! The poll closes at 8pm.

strategic note: if [livejournal.com profile] joeymichaels is in the bottom two, then whoever is third-from-last will be going home for sure. The safest place to be is in the top four on account of potential immunities.

Last night, [livejournal.com profile] cacophonesque and I went to a bar and then to dinner.

We started talking about The Myers-Briggs< Inventory, and discovered we had the following in common:

--We both score very close to the threshold on the "E/I" (Extrovert/Introvert) scale, and often switch sides because we are just a few points from the middle.
--We both score as an N on the "N/S" (Intuiting/Sensing) scale.
--We both score as a P on the "J/P" (Judging/Perceiving) scale.

On the last scale, one of us is an "F" (Feeling) and one of us is a "T" (Thinking).

We were wondering if our friendslists could guess. Many of you know both of us, so we were wondering.

I had this dream last night that was very vivid and revolved around a comic project that involved mailing pieces of original art to people. I don't want to give away the exact nature of the project, but I'd like to see if I can recreate it.

Since it's the right time of year to do holiday greetings (no, you will NOT be getting hats this year; there's just not enough time), I figured I would kill two birds with one stone and see how many of you would like cards AND how many of you would like to take part in this project.

In my dream, the project had already been completed once, one year ago, starting on December 2, and a second version of the project was underway. The project was called "The Kingdom" and the second year's installment was subtitled "No Place for a Black Ace," so that's what I'll be calling this project.

You DO NOT NEED to be my friend to participate. Nor do you need to be my friend to request an original holiday card. Nor do you need to live in the US. All you need to do is fill out the nifty textarea below.

Fill out the following

Comments are screened. If you don't have a holiday card post of your own but would like my address to exchange cards, please just leave me a note.

ALSO: Please feel free to link this elsewhere! In fact, I would love for you to link this elsewhere! The more the merrier.

I was thinking today about how, when I was a kid, I called my mother "Mommy" and my father "Daddy."

There was a brief period where I called my mother "Mommy Sharon," and I'm still not sure why I did that. It didn't last very long, maybe six months to a year when I was about five?

I could never bring myself to call my parents "Mom" and "Dad" even when all the other kids graduated to the more 'grown up' terms of affection. Mine were still Mommy and Daddy.

But at some point during adulthood, and to be honest I can't recall when it was, but I stopped calling my parents "Mommy" and "Daddy" and started calling them "Mama" and "Dada" instead. I have no explanation for it. I just did.

So I thought I would see what the rest of you call your parents. I know that doing polls like this doesn't take into account the sheer variety of families in today's world-- I know some of you have multiple mothers or fathers, or step-parents with whom you are closer than bio-parents, or were raised by aunts and uncles. If either of your parents passed away or lost contact for some reason but did so recently enough that you remember your relationship with them, just fill this out with what you best remember. I did add an extra field to put in other things-- like, if you have two moms, what do you call each of them, or what do you call your uncle who raised you, or what you call your stepdad vs. your bio-dad. Whichever. If it doesn't fit, please comment!

I had a really fascinating conversation with [livejournal.com profile] hymnicide last night. We talked about a variety of things, like alternative education, what it means to have career goals as a teenager, ethnic identification, and definition of 'whiteness'-- how some people are considered white in one geographic area and not considered white in another, or how some white-skinned ethnic groups are considered 'more white' than other white-skinned ethnic groups. We talked about how, growing up where we did, about half the people we know are Jewish, and most of the Christians we know are Catholic, not Protestant. We talked about some of the things [livejournal.com profile] arasan discussed in her post yesterday: about the real failure in the US to create pedestrian-friendly cities, as opposed to European cities that make it very easy to walk everywhere and to everything. We talked about the lack of a need for a car where we grew up in comparison to many places in the US. It was interesting.

Nora and I both grew up about ten-fifteen minutes away from each other, although she's more than ten years younger than I am. We had an interesting conversation about how college admissions have changed and how expectations of kids in high school have changed. Even how the reputations and demographics of certain top universities have changed: I don't want to name the school publicly, but she is looking at a school that I had a really hard time with when I went to visit. When I went there as a 16 year old bisexual kid looking at colleges, I was scared by new I heard about gay kids getting bullied on campus. She says that the same school now is reputed for being very open and liberal. Man, things change a lot.

Anyway, we started talking about whether being 'white' in New York is different from being 'white' in other parts of the country. For example, in some places, Jews and Italians are both definitely considered white, while in other places, they are definitely not. Growing up, I had a lot of friends whom I considered white who were not treated as white in other situations: Israelis, Iranians, Armenians, and so on. So I decided to make a poll about ethnicity. I would like to say that I had trouble wording some of these questions, so if you find the terminology limiting or in any way offensive, I apologize in advance, and please feel free to correct me or offer your own suggestions in the comments. I had a hard time deciding when to use 'white' as a label and when to use 'majority' as a label. Same goes for anything I might have overlooked.

my hair is currently chin-length, just long enough to put in a ponytail and just long enough to drive me nuts all the time, but too short to do anything wild and wacky with.

i need some moral support to either forge my own path and whack it off or decide to stick with it for the long run. *shrug*
